Matutu Brewery was born in the Cook Islands by two local mates who knew a guy in New Zealand famous for his award winning beers. In 2006, they scabbed his old vats for cheap and got him to design and teach them how to brew 2 awesome beers name Mai Lager and Kiva Pale Ale, these brews are all natural and delicious tasting. Take time to learn how to say these names the island way – you’ll taste the awesomeness more.
The boys, Eric and James and their trusted helpers Chris and KC, hand craft these beers. Seriously! With each brew they take 10 heavy sacks of grain up a ladder and feed them into the chute, hand stirring below in the vat. At the end of the mix, they dig out all the grain into wheelie bins and give it to the local famers. Bottles, some recycled, are hand labelled using a homemade foot pedal-pulley contraption, bit of island ingenuity. When the beer is ready, every bottle is hand filled and capped. This is done tin the chiller, its 0 degrees and they usually bottle 100 dozen per brew. That’s the hard part for the locals, the cold.
Then with much enthusiasm, the beers are loaded into their old van and hand delivered around the island. Fresh!
In honour of the Cook Islands reaching 50 years of independence Maeva IPA was created and added to the stable of regulars winning a bronze medal at the 2015 NZ Brew Awards. Other beers have found their way out of the doors of the brewery over the past 12 years they include Vi Mango Heffeweizen, Lime Radler, Akari Coconut & Vanilla Stout, Tuki Smash, Maine Mura Red Ale, Tiporo Pilsner, Salted Caramel lager and 'Rapa' an old scrumpy starfruit cider.

Kiva is an English style pale ale brewed with Bairds two row pale ale malt and also touches of crystal and chocolate malts. Generous amounts of Centennial and UK Goldings hops guarantee the integrity of this beer style. This creation gives you full-bodied fruity pale ale that can be enjoyed either chilled or slightly warmer if you are from the UK!
Mai is an authentic Lager brewed with German Pilsner malt and the addition of four hops which give this beer its distinctive notes. Super Alpha and Hallertau hops are added early to this brew which ensures it's crisp, bitter taste, while the later additions of Saaz (B and D) give off the estery aromas and flavours. These combined with brewer's passion give you genuine flavours to savour while quenching your thirst.
Beer Style: IPA (Indian Pale Ale) Big balanced beer, 4 malted barleys, lashings of hops Crisp passionfruit start with short bite ending with long malt flavours. ABV: 5%, IBU : 58.5
